Dr. Steven Sampson is a highly regarded sports medicine physician based in Los Angeles, known globally for his expertise in non-surgical orthopedics and regenerative medicine. As the founder of the Orthohealing Center, he is a pioneer in regenerative medicine and serves as a trusted advisor and physician to many distinguished athletes. Dr. Sampson established the world’s first international orthopedic regenerative medicine symposium with cadaver labs, the Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI). This annual event features foremost experts and leading industry on tendon, cartilage, and spine disease. His unique professional experience has led to a common thought: real-world clinical data is key for pushing the boundaries of innovative treatments.
Dr. Sampson was recently invited to present at the 2024 NBA Combine for the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association (NBATA). Upon preparing for this presentation, Dr. Sampson recognized a need for clear and compelling evidence to showcase the effectiveness of his cutting-edge treatments, particularly in regards to treating athletes with shockwave therapy in combination with orthobiologics.
Sharing the latest evidence can be challenging, particularly given the lengthy process involved in facilitating published clinical research. Dr. Sampson was confident in the positive outcomes he achieved using shockwave therapy combined with biologics such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), but he needed a concise and captivating way to showcase concrete evidence.
Dr. Sampson, a long standing member of the DataBiologics community, was able to assess his own patient reported outcomes to demonstrate the efficacy of shockwave therapy. Armed with real-world evidence, he was able to visually present his findings from the DataBiologics registry.
At the NBA Combine, Dr. Sampson used clinical outcomes data collected through the DataBiologics platform to highlight the success of his treatment methods with measurable outcomes:
Dr. Sampson’s innovative treatment protocols, such as integrating shockwave therapy with biologics, were able to be evaluated and compared to the global IMPACT registry. Furthermore, insights from DataBiologics’ turn-key data visuals allowed Dr. Sampson to present compelling real-world evidence in near real time to an audience at the NBATA. Dr. Sampson continues to evaluate additional modalities such as topical CBD cream, photobiomodulation (laser therapy), and long duration ultrasound (LDU) to accelerate healing for athletes.
